Abode Village View – Month of December
Update from our Executive Director – Al Bellenchia
As we enter December, we have moved into the reflection and planning cycle that our slow(er) season affords us. Quietly productive is the term that comes to mind.
It has been a year of change. Some of which was expected and planned for, and some which was not. Through it all, we have been moving forward, evolving to meet the needs of re-building and adapting to a world that truly needs the sanctuary that the Abode can offer.
We are deep into creating initiatives, activities and structures that will help us adapt and evolve. To thrive in the future, we need to welcome back many who may have drifted away for a time, while also calling to new hands and hearts to commit their energies to fresh manifestations of the Abode’s ideals.
In the words of Pir Vilayat: “Unless one is prepared to reconsider, restructure, innovate, one is not part of the evolutionary process.”
Pir Vilayat also spoke of building a “beautiful world of beautiful people” as one of his goals. Calling “hands to work” to build something new and beautiful at the Abode is certainly a vision that resonates today as much as it did decades ago. It is one that underpins our efforts to create stability and sustainability.
Last Thursday, we celebrated Thanksgiving in our Razzaq dining room, and the Abode was filled with volunteers, residents, family, and friends old and new. It was truly a day of thanks and giving. It was a reminder that, through the turbulence of the day-to-day, a deep and loving foundation exists here.
We remain dedicated to being an active Sufi community, with the practices and teachings of universal Sufism as our foundation. I am thankful for the dedication of our senior leaders including Yaqin Aubert and Wahida Young, as well as the many teachers and community members who have helped to hold our spiritual activities and programs during this year as we build for the future. I am also grateful to our wonderful staff and the volunteers who help hold all who live and visit here.
There are a few events and activities that will wrap up the year at the Abode, including a fabulous year-end retreat with Aziza Scott and Yaqin Aubert. Please check our calendar or programs pages for the details.
May the season of light shine good fortune on us all.
Update from our Programs and Marketing Coordinator – Topaz Ross Kelso
New Year’s Eve Retreat
Registration is open for the New Year’s Eve Retreat with Aziza Scott. Aziza invites you to start the new year with a sacred journey to yourself. Yaqin will be assisting this year, and a Livestream option is available. To register, visit theabode.org/programs or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Sunday 11:00 am Universal Worship
Tuesday 7:00 pm Philosophy of Spirituality Group
Thursday 7:00 pm Class on Light with Yaqin
On Thursday we moved the courtyard benches to the solar barn where they will be safe together, huddled for warmth, throughout the winter. Not to worry, though! We’ve added a different wooden structure to the courtyard so it won’t be empty. Instead of letting us sit down, this new thing keeps ice from falling on our heads as we use the Razzaq door.
Abode on the Road
On the winter solstice, Thursday December 21, Yaqin’s class on light will be held at Stable Gate Farm and Winery, home of the Stable Gate Dharma Collective, and a hub for interspiritual events. The Abode is planning to spend more time in relationship with other communities moving forward, so expect further collaboration and connection. All are invited, email email@example.com for more information.
Programs Office Update
As we wind down for winter, the programs office is fully focused on creating the infrastructure we need for 2018. This month, we are starting the winter tasks of reflecting, organizing and planning. This month we are finalizing our projections, and used the lessons of the past few years to learn which programs we will prioritize moving forward.
We have brought in three new program leads in the past two weeks, and are beginning dozens of conversations to continue the work of creating a more open and connected Abode. To those reading this newsletter, remember that you can be part of those conversations. If you know someone who is hoping to run a retreat or hold a workshop, put us in touch – if we can’t host it ourselves we may still be able to help.
Moving forward we envision a wider community of communities, where others know the Abode and the Abode knows others, where those who want to lead a program or host a program can find the perfect fit. What we are doing here is not just for us; we are working towards a world of deeper connection and community.
Thank you for being a part of that,
