A wonderful and very challenging teaching by Shihabuddin Suhrawardi, which finds remarkable commonality with quantum mechanics, may guide us to better understand the dream-like nature of the coarse mind’s activity and the luminosity and cognitive knowing of the subtle mind after we unpack it: “Matter encompasses everything that depends on perception by the senses for its existence…. It is important to realize that the intelligence and the soul, which are invisible, are dependent on matter for their perceptible manifestation. Matter enlightened by intelligence and the soul may point to its existence.”
During our past sessions we worked with awareness of awareness. Now, we will investigate how we may increase the meditative stability of our conscious awareness with Open Presence. While we have been working with passively observing the rise and fall of mental appearances on the empty space of the mind, Open Presence in addition inverts our awareness towards our retrospective subjective impulses that habitually attach themselves to these mental appearances; the consequence is the arising of emotions such as grasping, craving, aversion, fear, hopes, desires, etc We will also further consider the nature of intuition as an impulse, or a type of precognitive knowing, which is not analytical, inferential, syllogistic nor based upon reason; how are we understand precognition as something that perhaps filters up into the coarse mind from a higher source, the Divine or Primordial Consciousness, beyond the confines of past, present, future, location, time and space? Finally, and time permitting, we may question whether or not what we are consciously developing in mushahada will be reexperienced during the early stages of dying after we fully release and surrender our final breath and our body no longer provides the gift of a new breath in return.
