Village View – December 2020

Come, come, whoever you are.
Wanderer, worshiper, lover of leaving.
It doesn’t matter.
Ours is not a caravan of despair.
Come, even if you have broken your vows a thousand times.
Come, yet again, come, come.
Rumi
Dear Friends,
Rumi’s Urs is being celebrated as I write this, and his poetry is filling hearts and minds everywhere. More seem to be discovering Rumi each year, which is a benefit to the world, for he has so much still to teach us.
The quote above has special resonance this year. There has been so much difficulty and dislocation that it would be easy to descend into despondency.
Thankfully, we have overcome: we are not a caravan of despair. When faced with the unthinkable, a year without guests gracing our grounds, we altered our plans, looked forward, and created a new vision for the future of the Abode.
And as 2021 emerges, we will be calling all to come, yet again…when the time is right to do so safely. What you will find at the Abode in the new year is a renewed sense of purpose, intent and service — to wanderer, worshiper, lover of leaving.

Come as you are, be who you are. The Abode will provide all with Sacred Hospitality, as a manifestation of the Message. Find what you are seeking here.
We do not expect to return to an old “normal,” and believe that a “new normal” will emerge. We are preparing for this, and are planning a staged reopening as spring arrives: first for individual retreats, then small groups, then larger groups, when those are possible again.
There are many details that are still emerging, and much is still uncertain. We do know a few things: that we will plan for more individual stays and smaller groups, that we will operate more simply and efficiently, and that we will proceed in rehabilitating outdoor spaces, to provide more open areas for small groups to gather safely.
We will be calling for more help in the New Year, as we cannot accomplish what we need to do without more resources. We will need assistance in many areas: staff, volunteers, teachers, and donors. Come, come…
There is much possibility emerging from the mists of a year of upheaval.
There is hope and joy and light emerging.
Plan to join us. Come, come…
With gratitude,
Al
Give the gift of retreat this year!
Love is something if you give it away, you end up having more.

The Abode service team is a group of dedicated people helping to tend a facility and land that have been considered sacred since the land’s earliest known stewards, the Muh-he-con-neok. The Abode’s spiritual and service focus is the basis for offering sacred hospitality to all who cross our threshold.
As 2021 arrives, and we plan for a Spring opening, we are seeking to recruit experienced maintenance and facilities folks to help us undertake day-to-day care and upkeep and to facilitate upgrades. If you are looking to apply your skills and experience to preserving and rehabilitating something worthwhile, and to belong to a service-oriented team, please see the position descriptions below and connect with us!
